In recent days, news broke of significant layoffs at Eidos Montreal, with 75 employees losing their jobs due to a lack of available roles on existing projects. Following the announcement, reports emerged suggesting that the studio had been actively trying to expand its portfolio—specifically by pitching a new installment in the Deus Ex franchise.
According to insider information, this proposed sequel was not a revival of the previously canceled Deus Ex project that had been in development for two years, but rather a fresh concept. While concrete details remain scarce, insights from those familiar with the situation suggest it was intended to breathe new life into the iconic series.

Eidos Montreal has yet to provide any comments regarding the information that has surfaced.
However, the pitch struggled to gain traction. Some potential partners dismissed Deus Ex as “too niche” in today’s market. Others acknowledged the idea’s “charm and novelty,” but felt it didn’t align with the expectations or standards typically associated with the Deus Ex brand. Ultimately, publishers appeared hesitant to take on the financial risk involved. At the same time, they distanced themselves from responsibility for the resulting layoffs.
Eidos Montreal has not officially responded to the reports or commented on the future of the Deus Ex series. The most recent entry in the franchise, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, was released in 2016. Despite the modern series selling over 12 million copies worldwide, fans are still waiting for a long-promised continuation that has yet to materialize.
